Distinguished Energy Leaders Convene at North America Smart Energy Week

Seasoned and experienced academic thought leaders from the University of California, Merced, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Central Florida will guide delegates through three days of technical and academic programing in the solar, energy storage and smart energy technologies at the second annual Technical Symposium at Solar Power International and Energy Storage International on September 24-27 in Anaheim, CA.

The Technical Symposium is a three-day, academic and scientific focused program co-located with North America’s largest solar and storage events, SPI and ESI. The symposium includes oral presentations, panels, keynote speeches and posters from industry experts, featuring original research and leading edge discussions on topics ranging from new product engineering, to the latest in high efficiency cells, modules, energy storage, and microgrid technologies.

The 2018 Technical Symposium Committee consists of 17 scientists and industry thought leaders. The committee chairs include:

  • Sarah Kurtz, Professor, University of California, Merced School of Engineering; Sector: Photovoltaics
  • Andrea Alberto Mammoli, Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of New Mexico; Sector: Smart Technologies
  • Zhihua Qu, Ph.D., Pegasus Professor & Chair of ECE Department, SAIC Endowed Professor, CECS at University of Central Florida; Sector: Energy Storage

“Energy storage is the key technology for integrating the renewables and other sources of electricity, enabling electric vehicles, and making our electricity grid more reliable, resilient and sustainable. Its adoption is rapidly increasing, and we are excited about its transformative impacts,” said Zhihua Qu, PhD, the energy storage sector chair for the Technical Symposium. “By bringing together leading energy storage experts from academia, governmental agencies, industry, national labs, and utilities, The Technical Symposium showcases recent technology advances, integration practices and policies.”

The 2017 Technical Symposium featured a keynote plenary from Azeez Mohammed, President & CEO of GE Power Conversion, who discussed the future of energy related to new technologies and integrations, and the evolution of how we consume and share power.

“I look forward to Solar Power International each year to see the progress on business models that facilitate the utilities and PV companies working together” said Sarah Kurtz, who is the photovoltaic sector chair.

Smart technology and IoT devices are helping to grow the solar and storage industries. This market opportunity is reflected throughout North America Smart Energy Week in the SPI, ESI, and Technical Symposium programming.

“The Technical Symposium at SPI and ESI 2017, together with the main conference and exhibition, made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that solar, energy storage and information-enabled energy uses are here to stay, and will revolutionize the electricity sector,” Mammoli said.

The full educational schedule for The Technical Symposium will be available in May 2018. For more information, visit www.solarpowerinternational.com/the-technical-symposium.
